Restoration
In Kenya
COBEC
launched a large-scale coastal mangrove restoration project in 2020
focused on restoring over 600 hectares of degraded mangrove forests in Kilifi County
specifically within the Marereni mangrove ecosystem. This ecosystem is rich in biodiversity and natural resources
serving as a critical breeding ground for endangered green sea turtles and supporting local fisheries and coastal protection.
However
Marereni's mangroves face significant threats from both natural and human-induced degradation
including unsustainable harvesting for building materials. The increasing impacts of climate change have further heightened local communities' dependency on forest resources for survival.
This project aims to address these challenges by combining ecological restoration with community empowerment to tackle multidimensional poverty and promote sustainable resource use. We believe that long-term conservation success depends on the active involvement and well-being of the communities that depend on these ecosystems.
Over the past year
the project has planted 261
500 mangrove seedlings
successfully restoring 26.15 hectares of degraded land in the last one year
and directly engaging and supporting over 800 local community members in restoration efforts.
